The Space You've Left...

Another song I have created in memory of my beloved mom who passed away on October 7th, 2024.

The Space You've Left

Morning breaks against an empty chair

Where coffee steams for no one there

The kitchen holds our phantom talk

Your absent footsteps still walk

Through rooms that learned your gentle way

Of making ordinary sacred

I dial your number in my sleep

And wake to silence, vast and deep

The phone remembers how you'd call

With news of nothing, best of all

Those rambling hours spent between

The said and never-said

Time folds like letters never sent

Each birthday candle represents

The conversations yet to come

That death has rendered deaf and dumb

But love speaks fluent in the dark

Where memory makes its mark

If longing were a currency

I'd buy back every cup of tea

We shared while solving all the world

Our wisdom into comfort curled

You taught me how to truly hear

Beyond the words we fear

So on this day that bears your name

I light a candle just the same

Not for the sorrow or the loss

But for the bridge that love can cross

Between the then and here and now

You show me how

The space you left is not a void

It's where your presence is deployed

In every kindness I extend

Every heart I help to mend

Your birthday lives in how I choose

To love, and never lose

The best of what you gave to me

Your gift of empathy
